The European Commission Announced Fatigue
European Commissioner for Economic Affairs Valdis Dombrovskis said that the European Union is tired of sanctions against Russia.
In an interview with Euractiv, the European Commissioner commented on the exclusion of Russian businessmen Alisher Usmanov and Mikhail Fridman, as well as the ex-rector of the Crimean Federal University Andrei Falleyev from the sanctions lists.
"It is clear that there is a certain fatigue after five years of conflict [in Ukraine]"
According to Dombrovskis, it is impossible to make changes to the principle of unanimity when discussing the restrictions “impossible in the near future”, as Germany and the Chairman of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen wanted. Such a decision would require amendments to the EU treaties, and for this, in turn, the consent of the 27 EU countries is necessary.
Earlier, the European Union extended personal sanctions against Russia until 2029. In total, more than three thousand individuals and legal entities were subject to restrictions.
