Zelensky and Macron Discuss Moratorium on Energy Strikes
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with French President Emmanuel Macron in New York during the United Nations General Assembly’s High-Level Week. Their discussion, held at the residence of France’s Permanent Representative to the UN, focused on the possibility of ending strikes on Ukraine’s energy and civilian infrastructure.
Prior to his meeting with Zelensky, Macron spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump, emphasizing the urgent need for Ukraine to acquire interceptor missiles to strengthen its air defense systems. Macron also proposed a moratorium on attacks targeting energy sites, stating:
"We will join forces to achieve a moratorium on strikes against Ukraine’s energy and civilian infrastructure. The civilian population must be protected, and we must begin serious peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine as soon as possible."
Macron confirmed his intention to discuss this proposal with Zelensky.
The meeting occurs amid ongoing Russian strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure. Just the previous night, Ukrainian authorities reported ballistic missile attacks on Dnipro, Kryvyi Rih, and Pavlohrad, resulting in casualties.
Zelensky arrived in New York on September 21 to participate in UNGA events. During his visit, he also met with U.S. congressmen, expressing gratitude for the passage of a sanctions bill against Russia. A highly anticipated meeting between Zelensky and Trump is scheduled for September 22.
