EU fails to Extend Sanctions Against Putin
The bloc's ambassadors will try again on September 22 in the morning
he Committee of Permanent Representatives of the EU failed on September 21 to decide on the extension of sanctions for violation of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine, and the next meeting is scheduled for September 22 at 9:00 a.m. Bulgarian time.
According to European Justice sources in Brussels, the talks were about extending the sanction regime by 36 months, or three years. The dispute affected personal restrictions against Vladimir Putin, Sergei Lavrov, Viktor Medvedchuk, Viktor Yanukovych and about 3000 other individuals and legal entities.
One source, quoted by European justice, said: “Not all countries have sent the results of the vote.”
The compromise option envisaged removing Alisher Usmanov and Mikhail Friedman at the request of Slovakia and France from the list.
Until late last night, no unanimity had been reached on the continuation of sanctions, and the new vote was scheduled for the morning of September 22.
