Finland Demands Urgent Government Meeting Due to Fuel Prices
MP and head of the Committee on transport and communications of Finland Joni Ovaska urged Prime Minister Petteri Orpo to immediately assemble the Cabinet of Ministers because of rising fuel prices, writes the publication Iltalehti.
Ovaska believes that the Finns need solutions, not disputes between the ruling parties.
Earlier, the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Sari Essayya proposed to temporarily reduce the obligations to distribute fuel. According to the deputy, this indicates growing disagreements in the government. Different positions of ministers, he believes, show that the Cabinet does not have a single plan.
“Ministers in turn shouting their decisions in front of the public. Some MPs are accusing each other. This is not a leadership. The task of the government is to jointly evaluate the funds and make decisions, and not to explain to the Finns their internal differences,” Hovska said.
It requires the government to urgently develop a package of measures that will restrain price growth and soften the blow to people and companies. In addition, the deputy wants commercial diesel fuel to be launched before 2028, in large volumes and with the compensation that transport companies will actually feel.
"Prime Minister Orpo, convene a government. Stop arguing and get to work. The daily life of the Finns and the future of business can not wait. People can no longer afford to go to work,” the MP said.
As DP wrote, fuel prices in Finland returned to the level of 2022. Now diesel in Finland is the most expensive among all European countries, including due to high taxes on fuel. Experts attribute the rise in oil prices to military operations in the Middle East.
Earlier, the transport organizations of Finland demanded that the government take measures to solve the problem. According to representatives of the transport sector, the increase in prices is detrimental to the Finnish economy, since only for trucking trucks this means an additional cost of up to 480 million euros per year.
And the average price of fuel in the European Union has updated the historical maximum. For 50 liters of gasoline, about 103 euros are now asked, diesel - 108 euros. A liter of gasoline on average in the EU costs 2,063 euros, diesel - 2.159 euros. Both figures have been a record in the history of statistics since 2005.
